چکیده

It may be that semantic representations of both literally and metaphorically used words extend to neural regions related to their modality. Additionally, it is unclear whether underlying cognitive and neural mechanisms in metaphor and literal sentence processing are distinct, a confusion due to a lack of control over numerous confounding factors in previous research (Schmidt et al., 2010). We presented a highly controlled set of literal and metaphorical sentences ending in words from two modalities, auditory (shriek) and motion (crawl) (Cardillo et al., 2010) to 16 participants. The N400 (a gauge of semantic processing) was calculated based on electroencephalographic recordings at 64 scalp sites. We found an interaction between quadrant of electrode and modality, supporting modulation of neural semantic mechanisms by modality. No other main effects or interactions were found with this highly controlled stimulus set, consistent with the notion that metaphors and literal sentences share similar processing mechanisms.

Auditory and motion metaphors have different scalp distributions: an ERP study

While many links have been established between sensory-motor words used literally (kick the ball) and sensory-motor regions of the brain, it is less clear whether metaphorically used words (kick the habit) also show such signs of "embodiment." Additionally, not much is known about the timing or nature of the connection between language and sensory-motor neural processing. We used stimuli divide...

Auditory Motion Elicits a Visual Motion Aftereffect

The visual motion aftereffect is a visual illusion in which exposure to continuous motion in one direction leads to a subsequent illusion of visual motion in the opposite direction. Previous findings have been mixed with regard to whether this visual illusion can be induced cross-modally by auditory stimuli. Based on research on multisensory perception demonstrating the profound influence audit...

Selective deficits in human audition: evidence from lesion studies

The human auditory cortex is the gateway to the most powerful and complex communication systems and yet relatively little is known about its functional organization as compared to the visual system. Several lines of evidence, predominantly from recent studies, indicate that sound recognition and sound localization are processed in two at least partially independent networks. Evidence from human...

Neural correlates of motion processing through echolocation, source hearing, and vision in blind echolocation experts and sighted echolocation novices.

We have shown in previous research (Thaler L, Arnott SR, Goodale MA. PLoS One 6: e20162, 2011) that motion processing through echolocation activates temporal-occipital cortex in blind echolocation experts. Here we investigated how neural substrates of echo-motion are related to neural substrates of auditory source-motion and visual-motion. Three blind echolocation experts and twelve sighted ech...
